People In Music History
Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897) German composer, also pianist; born in Hamburg,
where as a youngster he played in sailors' taverns; pupil of Marxsen. In 1853
met Joachim, Liszt, Schumann, and others who became interested in him, visited
Vienna 1862, settled there 1863 (also died there). Never married. Entirely
devoted to composition from 1864, but did not write the first of his 4
symphonies until 1875. Composed no opera and did not follow widely prevalent
Lisztian ideal of Program music, but developed the forms of Beethoven's period
and showed notable rhythmic originality. Works include two piano concertos,
violin concerto, double concerto (violin and cello); Academic Festival and
Tragic overtures; Variations on the St. Anthony Chorale (orchestra or 2
pianos), formerly known as Variations on a Theme of Haydn; variations on themes
by Handel and by Paganini for piano, and many other piano works; chamber music;
songs (including Four Serious Songs) and part-songs; choral works, including A
German Requiem and Alto Rhapsody.
